[WIKIPEDIA]:In November 1966, Franklin’s Columbia recording contract expired and she chose to move to Atlantic Records. In January 1967, she traveled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to record at FAME Studios and recorded the song ‘I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)’, backed by the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Franklin only spent one day recording at FAME, as an altercation broke out between her manager and husband Ted White, studio owner Rick Hall, and a horn player, and sessions were abandoned. The song was released the following month and reached number one on the R&B chart, while also peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Franklin her first top-ten pop single. The song’s b-side, ‘Do Right Woman, Do Right Man’, reached the R&B top 40, peaking at number 37. In April, Atlantic issued her frenetic version of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’, which reached number one on both the R&B and pop charts. ‘Respect’ became her signature song and was later hailed as a civil rights and feminist anthem.

Franklin’s debut Atlantic album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, also became commercially successful, later going gold. Franklin scored two more top-ten singles in 1967, including ‘Baby I Love You’ and ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’. Her rapport with producer Jerry Wexler helped in the creation of the majority of Franklin’s peak recordings with Atlantic. In 1968, she issued the top-selling albums Lady Soul and Aretha Now, which included some of her most popular hit singles, including ‘Chain of Fools’, ‘Ain’t No Way’, ‘Think’ and ‘I Say a Little Prayer’. That February, Franklin earned the first two of her Grammys, including the debut category for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Sugar Hill Records 40th Anniversary Box Set

Format: 6 x 12″ Vinyl
Label: Rhino Records
Quantity: 2000
Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

Sugar Hill Records was the birthplace label for hip hop. It gave listeners their first exposure to urban rhyming and scratching that transformed pop music during the ‘80s. Many of the 12” singles and vinyl versions of their classics have been out of print for years, missing the rise of hip hop during the 80’s and 90’s.

This 12” boxset will not only be a must have for the listeners who grew up on the music, but for the DJ’s to be able to go back to the beginning and mix each strategically placed single into their own vinyl DJ set. This 6 Disc Vinyl 12” Boxed set will incorporate all of the label’s classic A-sides – many in their full length mixes.

We will have a small summary of the label and how it changed hip hop as liners and the boxed set will be packaged in a beautiful Sugar Hill Records slip case that pays tribute to the old school “feel” of the generation. Limited to 2000 copies worldwide

GOLDEN EARRING: Moontan

Format: LP
Label: Music On Vinyl
Quantity: 2500
Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

Originally released in 1973, this is the album that raised the band to an international level of popularity, primarily on the strength of the hit single and enduring radio favourite ‘Radar Love’. Moontan still is the band’s most successful album internationally, and paved the way for these Dutch rockers in the USA (where ‘Candy’s Going Bad’ was also released as a single).

The line-up of the Earring at that time was Barry Hay, George Kooymans, Rinus Gerritsen and Cesar Zuiderwijk, with special guests Eelco Gelling (slide guitar), Bertus Borgers (saxophone) and Patricia Paay (“lady vocal”) on this particular LP.

The record combines progressive epics and heavy rockers, and sometimes even combines both elements in one song. Moontan is not just a necessity for Golden Earing fans, it’s a worthwhile listen for anyone interested in Seventies Rock at its most adventurous.

Moontan is available as a limited edition of 2,500 individually numbered copies on turquoise coloured vinyl.

PINK FLOYD: A Saucerful of Secrets (Mono)

Format: LP
Label: Legacy
Quantity: 6500
Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

The limited-edition Record Store Day release is delivered on premium 12” 180-gram black vinyl, with a black poly-lined inner sleeve, and a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve, including the ‘Columbia’ logo, under which imprint (via EMI) the early Pink Floyd released in the UK.

Originally released in June 1968, A Saucerful Of Secrets represents a change in line-up and direction. Co-founder and original songwriter Syd Barrett contributed only one song to the album and his live appearances became more erratic. So unreliable were Syd Barrett’s live appearances that fellow founder members, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason decided to draft in David Gilmour, a friend of Syd’s, also from Cambridge. Roger Waters and Richard Wright contributed for this album four and three songs respectively. The album reflects this transition, containing a mixture of material, from the almost ‘music hall’ ‘Corporal Clegg’ through Richard Wright’s dreamlike and melodic ‘See-Saw’ and ‘Remember A Day’ to the title track – an 11-minute, four part instrumental excursion that both harked back to their UFO freakouts and looked forward to the longer, more anthemic instrumental sequences that were to become one of their signature elements.

In spite of the band having to wait a further 11 years for a UK hit single, the album reflected Pink Floyd’s popularity by charting at No. 9 in the UK. Produced by Norman Smith at London’s Abbey Road Studios, it features songs that remained on the band’s live setlist for many years, such as ‘Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun’ by Roger Waters and the title track, composed by Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and David Gilmour. ‘Corporal Clegg’ features a rare lead vocal on a studio album by Nick Mason, who otherwise appears with spoken word contributions to ‘One Of These Days’ on Meddle, and two tracks on ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason’.

The album’s cover artwork was the first ever sleeve design for creators Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson of the Hipgnosis design team, and was to lead to a ground-breaking career for them in the visual arts, including of course many more iconic Pink Floyd album sleeves, amongst them The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

A Saucerful of Secrets in Mono follows the successful release of Pink Floyd’s debut album The Piper At The Gates of Dawn in Mono in 2018.

SIDE A: 1. Let There Be More Light; 2. Remember A Day; 3. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun;4. Corporal Clegg
SIDE B: 1 A Saucerful of Secrets; 2. See-Saw; 3. Jugband Blues
